CLAN PHILOSOPHY
Our Clan
A clan is a Scottish word for a family who has, or had, a chief with land. Some people think that only the Highlands had clans, but in the 16th century the King of Scots produced his list of 'unruly Scottish clannis' - and on it were the Armstrongs. As we were based on the border between England and Scotland, we are what is known as a border clan.
When the two countries fought - as they did with great regularity - the Armstrongs were on the front line The 15th and 16th centuries were particularly turbulent times and the clans took to raiding, or 'reiving', to survive. Of all the families in the south of Scotland and north of England, the Armstrongs were the most feared and numerous. At one time they could put three thousand fighting men in the saddle.
There are other groups that represent the Armstrongs, but the Clan Armstrong Trust is the acknowledged voice of the Armstrongs on the border. We have the largest collection of Armstrong archives anywhere in the world. We have the finest Armstrong museum, situated in the heart of reiving country. We look after many Armstrong sites and monuments. We are recognised as the experts on Armstrong history. COME AND JOIN US!
Our Statement...
The Clan Armstrong Trust is an educational and research body, but it's also a Clan Society representing the interests of the Armstrongs worldwide. We make the following promise:
We will not knowingly publish anything of a historical nature
on the Internet unless the source references have been thoroughly
checked. The Trust is constantly investigating old statements
and traditions. There will always remain controversial areas.
History is full of legends which have been accepted as fact, but
repeat a legend often enough and it can become fact. If it is
proved beyond reasonable doubt to be wrong, the Trust promises
to amend the story and publish the correct version.
